Copper Chimney Work: What It Is and When Your Home Needs It

Chimneys Are a Common Place for Water to Get In

A chimney passes straight through the roof, and the joint around its base has to stay sealed in every season. When it is not, water finds its way in. At R&A Remodeling & Roofing, we seal it with copper.

Flashing Covers the Joint, and a Cap Covers the Top

Flashing is the metal that wraps the joint where a chimney meets the roof. Copper flashing seals that joint and keeps water from running into the gap. A copper chimney cap goes on top of the chimney. Together, the cap and the flashing keep the roof around the chimney dry. Both are part of our chimney caps and flashing work.

Copper Lasts for Decades and Bends to Fit

Copper does not rust, and rain and snow do little to it. On a chimney, that means flashing that lasts for decades with very little care. Copper can also be shaped to the corners and edges of a chimney, where a standard piece of metal may not sit tight. With time it takes on a natural patina, which protects the metal. We install copper flashing in valleys and along roof edges too, not only at the chimney.

Every Copper Piece Is Made to Fit the Chimney

Copper chimney work is custom. Each piece is made to fit the chimney it goes on, then fitted tightly so water runs away from the joint. Depending on what the chimney needs, the job can mean new copper flashing, a new copper cap, or repairs to flashing that is already there.

Chimney work can also be part of a new roof. On one full roof replacement, we took off the old shingles, repaired the chimney with custom copper, then put on the new roof. We are licensed and insured, and we do this work for homeowners, contractors, and builders across Stamford and the surrounding towns.

Water, Gaps and Worn Metal Mean Your Chimney Needs Attention

Signs that the area around a chimney needs work include:

  • Water coming in between the roof and the chimney

  • Gaps around the base of the chimney

  • Flashing that looks worn, damaged, rusted or weathered

  • A chimney cap that is missing or falling apart

  • Materials that have loosened or shifted over time

Connecticut weather can turn a small gap into a bigger problem quickly, so it is worth having it checked early.
